Vee's record their first Victory
“ U.C.S. Old Boys RFC 5 pts vs Verulamians RFC 20 pts
England’s early morning superlative victory over the All Blacks must have inspired Vees, plus some shrewd, very innovative, successful playing positional changes. It was a breezy, wet afternoon and the game was played on a beautiful, grassy flat pitch on the UCSOB’s recently built £25 million sporting complex.
Vees came out all guns blazing and for 20 minutes forced the opposition to defend their line heroically. However the rarely seen before scrum and line out dominance, backed up with a robust backrow eventually produced a gap for new fly – half Jack Hegarty to scythe through the OCSOB’s centre from 30 mtrs out and score close to the posts. Jim McCormack duly converted. Fired up with this and with the rain becoming more persistent Vees forwards drove hard and secured a penalty which gave Jim McCormack the chance to increase the score to 0 – 10. Tails up and fighting hard for every loose ball Vees young prop Rob Campbell secured the ball close 50 mtrs out and scored a sensational try close to the posts to boost the score to 0 – 17. Again from the restart Vees continued to press and were given a penalty for offside just before half time to allow which Jim McCormack to convert and make the half time score line very convincing in Vees favour.
Things should have continued in a similar vain in the second half, but the breeze became stronger and the rain more incessant and conditions became somewhat worse with knock – ons, dropped passes and scrums increasing, which disrupted all constructive play and Vees found themselves clearing their lines, when they should have strategically kicked to relieve the pressure rather than attempt to run the ball out of defence and create problems for themselves.
UCSOBs forwards benefitted from this and secured a well deserved, unconverted try to leave the final score at 5 – 20pts and give VERULAMIANS RFC their first victory in eleven months.
Let us hope that these well - earned three League points continues, when the Club entertains the Bank of England RFC at Cotlandswick on Sat Nov 9th KO 2.30 pm. “
