1st Team go down to Hendon

Hendon RFC 76 pts --- Verulamians RFC 0 pts

A beautiful, sunny rugby playing day. The recent rains had made the ground much less hard. The pitch had a distinct slope and with a wind in their backs created three tactical advantages on winning the toss. Hendon RFC won it and decided to play downhill and it became immediately evident that despite some valiant defence by Vees the result was going to be decided by half time as Hendon’s motivated, far fitter opposition strove to exert limb sapping, sometimes desperate defence from Vees, who even when they did gain some meagre position gifted it to a set of heavier, fleet – footed Hendon backs who delighted in taking advantage from the weakening positional changes Vees had to make. Coupled with this, there were two forward injuries.

By half time Hendon at 27 – 0 had secured their bonus point.

Not satisfied with that Hendon’s hungry forwards and and expansive backs set about running in uphill another 49 pts to leave Vees wondering what had hit them.

A game to put behind the team as they tackle BARNET ELIZABETHANS RFC  this coming Saturday at Cotlandswick  KO 3 pm.

Highlights there were though with outstanding individual performances from Oli Askew – Fountain, the wings Jack Hegarty and Gregor McKay, Joe Breeze and Mr. ‘100 %’ Darren Westhead plus the two 2nd Rows.’’
